How to set up a colourful table at the end of winter

When the skies are grey, and sunshine is nowhere to be found, we must take it upon ourselves to bring a little bit of colour into our homes. Whilst flowers are always a good idea, seeing something wither away during these dreary moments that inevitably accompany the winter season, is not something I look forward to.

One of the things I enjoy doing during these periods, is setting up my table with the most vibrant colours and clashing patterns! As these few snapshots show, it doesn’t take much to achieve a bold and cheerful mood.

I start by rummaging through my (albeit disappointingly small)  stash of table linens. I – suprise, suprise – pick my favourite one with beige checks on a dirty, dark pink (almost reddish) base. As this one leans either way too Christmas-y or way to spring-y, I decide to look through my small stash a second time. Catching my eye with its soft, muted hues, I choose a small square tablecloth with a buzzy flower pattern.

Although, perhaps, not an evident choice to pair this one with my first pick, I like how the muted reds and beiges match and compliment each other, whilst the other colours leave room for more colour-matching with the things I’m actually going to put *on* the table.

For the tableware I grab these striking blue and white French fish plates. I like how the colours are in stark contrast with not only each other, but also the muted tones of the cloths underneath. Seeing how these two colours really ‘popped’, I decide to use white and blue as my main colours to tie in everything else.

The white allows me to use basic wax candles, and a gorgeous white Italian vase as a centre piece. Even the insides of my small and extremely light Japanese teacups match beautifully. It also provides a general sense of calm to the table, whilst letting the other colours stand out.

And what other statement can I make then to just GO for orange?! I got inspired by this tiny milk jug, which has an abstract flower pattern with the prettiest shade of orange. And since we have some of the actual fruit in the house (allright, they’re clementines – but you get the gist of it!), I use them on the large fish platter. To achieve the same contrasting effect with the plates, I place bright orange napkins underneath them, as to not hide their pretty imagery. The soft peachy shade on the teacups is a subtle nod to the loud orange on the rest of the table.

With most pieces having some blue in them, they really play off each other and go well with the muted blues of the small table cloth. I mix in some glass, along with pops of silver in the spoons and candle holders. These cool-toned pieces really provide, in my opinion, some freshness to my heavy and bold pattern and colour blocking. Et voila, after playing around with the placement of the items, my table is looking cheerful and happy!

To sum up, I listed my top tips:

  1.  Take a look at what you already have. Old favourites can sometimes still surprise you when paired with some unexpected colours, patterns or items.
  2. Start from the base: the table top. What tablecloth makes you happy or adds a cheerful note to your space? Or maybe the material of the table itself can provide a nice canvas to work off?
  3. Choose 1 or 2 ‘pop’-colours to contrast or match other items with (here I used blue and white). 1 can be limiting, whilst 3 or more can quickly become to overbearing or buzzy.
  4. Pay attention to contrasting and also matching colours (even in the tiniest patterns or pieces). A lot of things can look good together if you just try them out together.
  5. Also consider the muted shades of your chosen colours. Matching tonal items provide cohesion without everything looking the same. Example: the teacups have soft whites, blues and oranges in them.
  6. Be whimsical and dare to experiment! My inspiration for this bold look came from a tiny milk jug, and I ran with it!
And most of all: have fun doing it! This is your space, and it should reflect your style and provide you with joy.
